Speaking of pews

My first year in Japan, I spent weekday mornings at the dining room table with a 1st grader and a 3rd grader. As I worked on phonics with the 1st grader, her older brother worked independently, but heard our every word. With each word the 1st grader practiced sounding aloud, I asked her to use it in a sentence. On the day we learned the "-ew" sound, she was stumped by the word, "pew."

Turning to her younger brother, I asked him to use it in a sentence. He replied, "I think those are things they have in America for you to sit on in church."
