Zermas of Niger

As the team drove into the village, it was obvious that the children had eagerly anticipated their arrival. They rushed around the missionaries asking, "Do you have another story today?" The village was a Zerma village in Niger, and the team consisted of several International Mission Board (IMB, Southern Baptist) couples who visit the Zerma village on a regular basis.

IMB missionaries have found relationship evangelism to be the most effective means of reaching the Zerma people of West Africa. This is done one on one through relationship building in small group settings. They are using Chronological Bible Storying methods, cassette tapes with an evangelical message, music, drama, and children's ministries to touch hearts and lives. Recognizing that the gospel is for the whole person they are also involved in various projects to improve health and living conditions. These efforts often open the door to evangelism. The vision of the Zerma team is to facilitate a church planting movement that will result in these churches reproducing themselves throughout the cities, towns, and villages where the 2,500,000 Zerma people live.

The Zermas practice a type of folk Islam that includes many Animistic practices. About half of their population is under the age of 15 due to increasing birthrates and decreasing infant mortality. The missionaries need volunteers to help as drama teachers, sewing instructors, mentors, and prayer walkers.


Pray for volunteers to answer the call to help the Zermas, by praying for them and serving along side the missionaries.-JS
