It was a weird spring, so it was a strange planting season. Crops were planted during three windows of time. And there were weeks and weeks between those windows. So, that makes for a strange harvest.
I pass the same farms four times a day.
Some crops are already harvested, and those fields are empty. So the horizon is much bigger than it has been all growing season. And intersections are safer, because you can see cars approaching.
Other fields are still quite green. Definitely a strange growing season.
One field has recently had a bunch of tires and pipes delivered to it. Soon we'll get to watch them build a pivot irrigation system. Maybe we'll see them digging a well. Last week, the well-diggers were at a farmhouse on our route.
A few fields on our route have had drainage pipe installed. That is quite the logistical operation!
One section of road (near a field that floods badly) had a pipe put in underneath the road yesterday (without digging up or closing the road!).
As I drove south on a narrow road one day this week, the combine in the field next to the road was driving north ... on his first pass through the field. So, he was VERY close to the road. Shelled corncobs were flying behind him ... onto the road. And one fell down onto the roof of our van! Jim says that he was supposed to stop, just like when mowing ditches, farmers are supposed to stop when a car comes by.
