I'm always up for a good challenge to help with external motivation! As we enter a new year, perhaps you'd like to consider one of these challenges for you or your family. :)
A friend introduced me to the 52 Hike Challenge (see here). "A challenge where you will gain physical fitness, mental well-being, make new friends, explore new places, and connect with family, friends and yourself through nature."
"One hike, every week for one year" is their motto.
There is also the 1000 Hours Outside movement. I particularly like the different trackers available on their website. I think they would make a good visual for children.
"The entire purpose of 1000 Hours Outside is to attempt to match nature time with screen time. If kids can consume media through screens 1200 hours a year on average then the time is there and at least some of it can and should be shifted towards a more productive and healthy outcome!"
A local nature preserve near us has a 100-mile hiking challenge. That might seem ambitious, and the reward is merely a t-shirt (plus the pride & satisfaction of a job well done!), but if we have 10 more years of family hiking before LG goes to college, surely we can do 100 miles!
Have you been motivated by any physical fitness challenges?
