Morning Chores

I dropped the children off at 7.37 AM, saving myself a few steps by having LG take the box of chips Amazon delivered yesterday.  He had instructions to drop it off in the office, saying it was for the teachers' snacks.  (The PTO had a long Sign Up Genius to "Stock the Fridge.")

I had already had breakfast and started one load of laundry.  Jim was already gone for the day.  I just wanted to go back to bed.  "Rest! Rest! Rest!" it seemed to call to me. :)

Instead, I gathered some energy, put our sheets in the washer, turned the dishwasher on, and, after staring at a M-E-S-S-Y garage for way too long, dragged the wading pool out of the mess and wrangled it into the van.

After dropping it off at the farm shed 3 miles away, I dropped off some cardboard here in our village, and went to the "new park," turned on an audible book, and walked the mile loop.

Coming home, I was ready for some sustenance, so saved $6 and tried to recreate the filling of a delicious wrap I have purchased in the past at the gas station. ;)

To a bowl, I added chopped lettuce, a chopped chicken thigh from supper, some shredded cheese, some chopped red onion, and BBQ sauce & ranch dressing.  I think the one I ate had bacon in it, too, but the one I made was good enough!

And then I tackled the garage.  UGH!  By 10.30, it looked much better.  The ride-on toys each had a spot.  The floor was swept.  And I had a huge pile of farm clothes to wash.

Day 5 of our new routine

1 - I'm still recovering from our zero-routine, 8-trip summer.

2 - We are still adjusting to our school year bedtime & wake up time. :)

3 - In the first 4 days of school, I had three appointments, two of which have precipitated lots of next steps.

4 - Are you a mom? Do you have other moms to pray with? Check out Moms in Prayer!

5 - Are you a teacher? Do you pray with other teachers? Check out Teachers in Prayer!

6 - After our Tennessee trip, we had a long weekend in Wisconsin, a long, full day of appointments in a city 70 miles away + a play date there, a play date here, and two back-to-school nights.

7 - This week, swim lessons start back.  Next week, Trail Life, Awana, and afternoon speech therapy start back.  Welcome, fall!

8 - We are not doing team sports this fall.  I'm holding out the carrot of Upward Basketball during the winter (that will be great exercise, I hope!), although I may be the only one excited about it. ;)

How's back to school going for you? :)

School Year Goals

On this first day of school, I'm thinking ahead to my school year goals.

Last year I had lots of goals, but a friend (several friends) wisely counseled me that, after 3 years of LG's commuting, a pandemic, and my health issues, I might need to throw my goals out the window and just use the 3.25 hours each day that LM was in school to ... rest!

Many of my big goals did not get met.  Many of my days were spent going to appointments.  Many mornings I rested.

This year I am in a better place, and I have more time each day, so even if I need to rest, I still have a few bonus hours.  We'll see how it all pans out.

I have homemaking goals (purging, organizing, cleaning).  I have cooking goals (meal plans, grocery shopping, batch cooking).  I have exercise goals (maybe including water exercises &/or physical therapy). I have friend goals (if you haven't received a birthday, anniversary or Christmas card from us in a few years, that may change).  I have Bible study goals (personal & a return to group study).  I have reading goals (all those books on parenting & adoption & special needs that I have amassed in the past 8.5 years but have not had time to read).  I have marriage goals (lunch with Jim).

We will see what goals the Lord has for me.

Along these same lines, I am now in the privileged position of being a stay at home "older" woman in the church & community.  How does the Lord want me to steward that? And what will that look like in coming years as well, assuming I have health & strength?  I'm blessed with some great examples of women who proactively serve, but I realize we are each different.

Will I stop by a younger mom's home and do her dishes or fold her laundry once a week? (Maybe not yet.) Will I tutor a homeschooled child in upper math or writing? Possibly someday.  Will I lead a Bible study at church? Probably not this year.  Will I take meals to the home of a newborn?  Hopefully!

What are your school year goals?

Summer Learning

I had great goals for summer learning (for the children)!  Some fizzled.  And some that I didn't plan for were reached.  What matters is that we all kept learning & growing. :)

At the beginning of the summer, LM taught herself to pump on the swings!  She learned to get started all by herself, too, so she can independently go outside and swing.  Hooray!

Then she learned to take her feet off the ground while she's on the balance bike!  She probably is ready for a two-wheeler!  Such great gross motor progress!

She became a puzzle whiz!  I put on both of their daily dockets to do a puzzle every day and play a game every day.  (Spoiler: that didn't happen, but it happened a lot more than if I hadn't put it on their docket.)  9-piece puzzles were excruciating to do with her at the beginning of the summer, but she quickly mastered them, and moved on to 12- and 24-piece puzzles, and then 48-piece floor puzzles.  I think working puzzles has become as comforting to her as reading books is to LG.

She will tell you that she can read now, too, but that just means that she looks at books and tells what's happening. ;)  It's a step!

We signed LM up for 6 one-on-one swim lessons again this summer.  She missed two, due to our trip to Tennessee, but really learned a lot in the four she took.  (Kudos to some great girls on the high school swim team who are entrepreneurs and great teachers!)

Both children learned to swallow pills mid-June.  That was one of my two main goals (along with tying shoes).  We were going to practice one or the other every day until they got it.  We only practiced with sprinkles a couple days.  When we moved up to mini M&Ms, they both got it within 5 minutes.  That evening, LM tried to swallow her chewable iron pill, and was successful!!  She was so very proud of herself!!  And we were impressed and thankful!

As for LG, in addition to learning to swallow pills, he learned a lot about baseball (basically started at zero).  He is great in the outfield, getting players out at 3rd on multiple occasions.

LG often sets out on the mile loop when we go to "the big park."  Sometimes he runs, sometimes he bikes, sometimes we all three do it (all walking or a combination), sometimes he asks me to time him.  I'd prefer a chart, a regular schedule, and trying to beat his PR.  But this is more self-motivated, and he experienced the pride and satisfaction of a job well done.

I signed LG up for the school's summer program (weekly assignments on the classroom app).  It didn't take him long each week, but it kept him engaged with math & literacy.

LG will be trialing typing (rather than writing) this fall at school, and I asked if we could get started learning it over the summer, so (some days) he did 15 minutes a day of typing practice.

His biggest achievement was going to summer camp and all the learning that goes with that, including being fully responsible for his hearing aids!

Both children gained soccer skills in a 4-day soccer clinic (10 minutes from home!).  And LM started learning Spanish (with LeapFrog Learning Friends 100 Words Book)!  She "speaks" Spanish frequently, and now she can learn real Spanish. :)

What did you learn this summer?

Thy Way Not Mine, O Lord

30-odd years ago I used to walk to the park and play hide-and-seek with a family of missionary kids.  They're all adults and parents now and scattered around the globe.  One of them "just so happened" to be at a favorite missionary vacation spot in Japan this summer and posted a short video clip of the Sunday night hymnsing on the dock.  It was less than 30 seconds, but I was overtaken by emotion, and knew right away what hymn it was, though I haven't sung it in the past 13 years. (I have NEVER heard it sung in an American church! Have you?)

::reprint from November 23, 2008::

#9 - Thy Way Not Mine, O Lord

The Japanese hymnal sets this hymn to the tune of Jewett (which is typically used to sing "My Jesus, As Thou Wilt"), so that is the only way I have ever heard it. In fact I first heard it in Japanese, as a child in Kingsport, when I watched the movie, Shiokari Pass, at the Christian Cinema.

Years later, here in Japan, I was delighted to hear it again one Sunday. Every time I have ever heard it sung here, I have been moved by seeing people cry as they try to sing it. This is a strong hymn of submitting ourselves to God, reminding ourselves as we sing it, that He is the One Who knows best and will choose best, even if that feels like death and pain in this life.

In my hymnal I've written a note referring to a quote from Spurgeon's Faith's Check Book (see below) and a quote from Valley of Vision, page 106, both of which relate to the message of this hymn.

Valley of Vision

I confess ... that I am unfit to choose for myself,
for it is not in me to direct my steps.
...
May I seek first thy kingdom and its righteousness.

My Choice Is His Choice

He shall choose our inheritance for us. (Psalm 47:4)

Our enemies would allot us a very dreary portion, but we are not left in their hands. The Lord will cause us to stand in our lot, and our place is appointed by His infinite wisdom. A wiser mind than our own arranges our destiny, The ordaining of all things is with God, and we are glad to have it so; we choose that God should choose for us. If we might have our own way we would wish to let all things go in God's way.

Being conscious of our own folly, we would not desire to rule our own destinies. We feel safer and more at ease when the Lord steers our vessel than we could possibly be if we could direct it according to our own judgment. Joyfully we leave the painful present and the unknown future with our Father, our Savior, our Comforter.

O my soul, this day lay down thy wishes at Jesus' feet! If thou hast of late been somewhat wayward and willful, eager to be and to do after thine own mind, now dismiss thy foolish self, and place the reins in the Lord's hands. Say, "He shall choose." If others dispute the sovereignty of the Lord and glory in the free will of man, do thou answer them, "He shall choose for me." It is my freest choice to let Him choose. As a free agent, I elect that He should have absolute sway.
