Incomprehensible

Our favorite six-year-old shared a meal at our table recently, and we decided to sing, "God is so good," before the meal.

The chorus over, Jim was ready to pray.  Until a voice piped up.

"Can we sing another verse?  In my class we call out words and then we sing the song with that word."

"Okay. What word do you want to sing?"

"My favorite is 'incomprehensible.'  It means 'more than we can know.'"

And so, having been instructed by our guest theologian, we sang:

"God is so incomprehensible,
God is so incomprehensible,
God is so incomprehensible,
He's so good to me!"

I dare you to try substituting that 6-syllable word for "good!"

Say what?

From the time I was a little girl riding 600 miles in the car to visit our cousins, I've known that different regions of the U.S. have different ways of speaking the same English language. That may be one reason I so much enjoyed the college course, "History of the English Language."  And it got me out of lot of pickles as an English conversation teacher in Japan when my Japanese students were convinced that a phrase I had just taught them was wrong because they knew a different way to say it. "People in different places of the same English-speaking country use different words to express the same meaning."

Where I grew up, 5-10 year old children go to elementary school.  Here they go to grade school, though the sign on the front of the building says "Elementary School."

Where I grew up, I heard comments like the following:

He teaches in the county schools.
She works for the city schools.
Such-and-such County Schools are out for snow today.
Or I would see a school bus that said: "X County Schools."

Here, I hear:
I taught for years in Unit 7.
District 23 won the highest academic awards.
Or I see school buses that say: "Midstate CUSD 31."

According to Wikipedia:

A unified school district (in Arizona, California, and Oregon) or unit school district (in Illinois) is a school district which generally includes and operates both primary schools (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high schools (grades 9–12) under the same district control.
This distinction is predominant in Illinois and the western states, where elementary school districts and high school districts are, or were, generally separate. The Los Angeles Unified School District (sometimes referred to as "LA Unified") is a major example of a unified school district in California. In Illinois, unit school districts must not be confused with consolidated or union school districts, which are generally formed by the consolidation of multiple school districts of the same type.

Favorite Green Beans

I like green beans.  I like green beans that have added flavor.  I don't like to add cream-of-something soup to every vegetable I eat.  (I love the flavor; just can't handle the calories.)

One day I quick ran to the local IGA just down the street for a bag or two of frozen IGA-generic green beans ... and was surprised to see a recipe on the back that looked perfect.

Since then, it has become my staple vegetable dish for when we have company.

But about thirty minutes before company comes, I'm always scrambling to find where I put the recipe.  So here it is, so I can always find it, and in case you want to try it at your house, too!

Bacon Walnut Green Beans

1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp minced garlic
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
16 oz. frozen green beans
2 oz. diced & cooked bacon
salt to taste

1.  In a non-stick skillet,  heat oil with garlic and walnuts on medium heat for 2 minutes.
2.  Add green beans, toss and cook on medium-high for 5 minutes.
3.  Add bacon, stir and season with salt and cook an additional 2 minutes. Serve.
Makes 4 servings.

On our coffee table

On our nightstand coffee table:

I like to keep our (glass-topped) coffee table clear of clutter, but for now I'm loving the invitation to learn that is scattered all over it!

Santa Claus brought the academic member of our marriage the following:
  • The Smithsonian's UNIVERSE, published by DK,
  • The Smithsonian's History of America in 101 Objects
  • Frommer's Florida, and
  • Sanctified Trial: The Diary of Eliza Rhea Anderson Fain, a Confederate Woman in East Tennessee,
in addition to a few philosophy books by my uncle

My Kindle has more books than I could read unless I truly were stranded on the proverbial desert island.  I am intrigued by various bloggers' reading plans (see here or here), but have never actually made a list of books I want to read in a new year.

I think the first link above to a blogger's reading plan is the outline I should follow:  set a goal of reading a certain number of books, and month by month, come up with the actual list of titles I want to read in that month.

Do you have any must-read books to suggest?

Do you set reading goals each year?

2013 in review

Every four or five years I take a leap forward from the technological dark ages.  2013 was the year of one such leap.  We secured an iPass, so we don't have to stop at toll booths (and so we save about 50%).  I now read on a Kindle Paperwhite.  In the spring I upgraded to texting (gasp!!!), though it's still a rare day when I text.  And just before the new law went into effect on January 1st, I linked my phone to the bluetooth phone system in our car.

Whew!  Glad to have all that technological leaping out of the way for another four or five years!

When Jim learned mid-year that I didn't have a sewing machine, he quickly changed that, and I have enjoyed a new avenue of creativity.  Two rooms have valances, bed runners, and some throw pillows.  I have a new apron, and a growing pile of projects I want to accomplish!

2013 was only the third year since 1994 that I did not live or travel outside of the U.S.A.  But we enjoyed exploring Arizona & the Four Corners area as well as the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky.  Both areas have incredible natural beauty, though of completely opposite kinds -- brown desert vs. lush green grass!

At the time, 2013 seemed like a slow musical year, but we enjoyed a Sons of the Pioneers concert in the Old West, an outdoor concert by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a couple budding artists' concerts (i.e., piano recitals and school band concerts), and a variety of Christmas concerts.  The community chorus' rendition of Handel's Messiah was the most glorious, but the small candlelight concert in a tiny stone chapel on a cold winter's evening was the best atmosphere!  The duet (backed up by orchestra and choir) of "God With Us" was heavenly, but the warbling voices of faithful saints now in their 70s and 80s was heavenly in a different sense.

New lines in our guest book include college friends (and their children I had never met!), cousin's grown children, former co-workers, former co-workers' grown children (and grandchildren!), and family.

On our travels, we were excited to get to see former co-workers, three different cousins in three different states, a whole side of the family at a reunion, and Jim's former pastor & his wife.

A meaningful tradition was the start of a Family Prayer meeting with Jim's extended family.  We've met twice so far, and those who live out-of-town held their own prayer meeting via conference call at the same time.

In terms of how I spend my days, my out-of-the-home activity level really ramped up this fall with book club, various Bible studies, two school volunteer gigs, and ESL private tutoring, not to mention Sunday School team-teaching and the missions conference planning team.  Maybe in 2014 my in-home activity level will ramp up a bit, and I'll have a more streamlined system for homemaking. :)

The bottom line of our 2013, though, is that we felt our need of God more, and we found Him faithful. What more could anyone want in a year?

* stayed there on more than one occasion

The list is in rough chronological order.  It was a slow travel year.  Two new states in 2013 (YAY, Arizona! and Utah ~ thanks to Four Corners National Monument ~ although years ago I'd had a layover in Salt Lake City Airport), one new national park (Saguaro), plus Monument Valley (a Navajo Tribal Park)  and one new airport (PHX), but mostly new memories!!

Where did you go in 2013 for the first time?
