I ate lunch in a tall building across from Tokyo Station. Seated near me were two groups of six businesspeople. One group was discussing an upcoming court case and how best to represent their client. They were speaking completely in English! The other group had two foreigners in it.
I felt very disoriented to hear English and see foreigners whom I don't know.
Later, as I rode down the elevator in a community hall in another part of Tokyo, a man entering the elevator said in English, "Sorry." When the elevator reached the first floor, he held back and said, again in English, "After you."
I felt even more disoriented.
