Garrison Keillor in his "Prairie Home Companion" radio program often tells about the Norwegian bachelor farmers near fictional Lake Wobegon. And that is the phrase someone used to describe Jim a few years ago. I'm not sure I would agree that he was a Norwegian bachelor farmer, but he indeed was a bachelor farmer.
Recently a farmer friend was telling about trying to work something out with a neighboring farmer, who is a bachelor. "You could tell he isn't married. The word 'give' is not in his vocabulary. He doesn't have a clue what compromise is."
I'm glad I did not marry a bachelor farmer such as that one.
