Living cross-culturally not only gives one a never-ending series of opportunities to practice doing things differently, it also means that gradually that which once was different becomes familiar. Then when one re-enters one's home country, what
used to be normal is now that which is different. It can be exhausting.
A few things I remember being different:
- having to stop for school buses,
- pumping one's own gas,
- reciting the Lord's Prayer & Apostle's Creed in English (and searching the far corners of my brain to remember them), and
- not having to bag one's own groceries.
