It chimes at 11.30 AM, and then the broadcast, heard far and wide, commences. Today's announcement consisted of the reading of two obituaries of elderly citizens who died in the past day. In less than two weeks here, I have heard of almost as many deaths as I have in my 11 years in Chiba.
No doubt one reason is the difference between rural and urban communities and how much one knows about one's neighbors. Another reason is that, despite the graying of Japan, I live in an area of population growth, as new people, especially young families, continue to move into the new towns.
My readings in M'Cheyne are very appropriate.
